Senior Planning Engineer – Underground
Own the design and scheduling work on a long life underground operation, from development and stoping designs through to the life of mine plan.
The operation
An underground operation in Western Australia with a long reserve life ahead of it. Mine planning is held in house, so the design and schedule work described here is owned on site rather than pushed out to a consultancy.
The role
A senior planning seat covering the design and scheduling of underground mining activity. You build development and stoping designs in Deswik, then carry them through into the quarterly and life of mine schedules alongside the principal engineer.
The seat sits in technical services and works across disciplines daily: ventilation on airflow and secondary egress, geotechnical on stability in every design, and geology on the resource movements that shift the schedule. It suits a planning engineer with seven years or more underground who wants design ownership rather than a reporting seat.
Key duties
- Develop and optimise underground mine plans against the geological, geotechnical and safety parameters
- Build development and stoping designs in Deswik
- Work with the principal engineer on the quarterly and life of mine schedules and align them to corporate targets
- Monitor schedule performance and adapt it as operational conditions and resource estimates move
- Design and optimise underground infrastructure including raises, declines and haulage systems
- Lay out mining equipment and materials handling for efficient extraction
- Partner with ventilation engineering so airflow and secondary egress are designed in rather than retrofitted
- Work with geotechnical engineering so stability is addressed in every design
- Coordinate with geology and other stakeholders so resource and reconciliation changes land in the plan
What you will need
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mining engineering, geotechnical engineering or a related field
- Seven years or more in underground mining engineering with a strong planning and design focus
- Deep working knowledge of mine engineering principles and practice
- Deswik proficiency
- Strong analytical and problem solving ability
- Able to communicate and work across technical disciplines
- National police clearance obtained in the last six months, or the ability to obtain one
- Able to pass a pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol screen
- Full Australian working rights
